Researches Of Optical Illusion In Environmental Space Designs And Its Application

Vision is one of the most important tools for human beings to acquire information from the outside world. Optical illusion, as a special kind of inevitable visual perception, can be often experienced by human beings in their long-term practices. As a false visual image, Optical illusion is formed under the joint forces of various environmental conditions and influenced by some other factors, such as psychological factors and physiological factors.Centered on the topic of environmental space design and the application to it, this dissertation mainly deals with the following two problems: 1), spatial and morphological optical correction;and 2), unconventional and unorthodox artistic designs. So far as the first problem is concerned, with some knowledge of the causes of optical illusion and its various representations, we can take advantage of its basic principle in a reasonable way by applying them to our designs, so that some possible bad visual effects brought about by it can be avoided and our designs can be thus made more humanized. In regards to the second problem, optical illusion can lead to the difference between visual images and real objects. This kind of difference can cause the uncertainty of the optical system, stimulate an optical nervousness by its special visual stimulus and finally arouse people's interest. Taking advantage of some interesting aspects of optical illusion, we can create unconventional and unorthodox artistic forms;applying it to environmental space designs, we can achieve peculiar and variegated artistic effects. Therefore, the discussion of the basic principles of optical illusionand its application to environmental space designs has both theoretical meanings and practical meanings. However, as a universal phenomenon, it has not yet attracted sufficient attention from the general designers. In this dissertation, various phenomena of optical illusion has been classified and the great attention is paid on the discussion of their artistic values and their application to environmental space designs in the hope that it can attract enough attention from the general designers so that a more widespread application of optical illusion as an important artistic technique can be achieved in the future.The main research in this dissertation is conducted through empirical approach, literature research and logical speculation. Empirical approach includes optical measurement, observation and virtual environmental reproduction;literature research includes researches about the basic principles of optical illusion, cases of the application of optical illusion in environmental space designs, comparison of theoretic researches and applications in China and in the West;and logical speculation, based on the concrete situations, employs alternatively a series of methods during the process of researching, such as analysis, synthesis and deduction.By analyzing its causes and offering its solutions with graphic representations, the dissertation summarizes the definition of optical illusion and its basic principles after the discussion of the relationship of between optical illusion and arts in earlier time and of the application optical illusion to artistic design. The greater emphasis is paid to the analysis of the researches of various phenomena of optical illusion in environmental space design and its application to architectural designs, indoor & outdoor decorations, frescos, scriptures and environment markings, in regards of optical correction and optical utilization.The application of optical illusion to architectural decoration is of practical significance in that it plays an important role in optical correction so far as morphological illusion and color illusion are concerned. On the one hand, we can create a more humaneenvironmental architecture in accord with human beings' visual habits and on the other hand, we can create more peculiar architectural styles by taking advantage of optical illusion. For example, we can not only take advantage of optical illusion to change people's visual perception of space and to create a more harmonious polychromy so far as indoor & outdoor decorations are concerned;we can also avoid optical distortion in frescos by taking advantage of optical illusion, since frescos, in a certain sense, also belongs to architectures and its visual effects should also be fully considered. What's more, peculiar features of frescos can be added to attract spectators' interest by taking advantage of optical illusion too. As for sculptures, unconventional and unorthodox artistic effects can be also achieved. In order to convey a better and more peculiar visual effects, we can also take advantage of optical illusion. The design, modeling and layout of road surface characters marks in municipal transportation can also become more humanized once we apply optical illusion to it. Based on the basic principles of visual perception, we can not only come to realize the important practical significance of the application of optical illusion to road surface characters marks, we can also come to the conclusion of a more humanized distance formula of road surface characters marks.
