The mechanical structure of a magnetic suspended rotor has great influence on its temperature raise and distribution of temperature field. Because of the working characteristic of a magnetic suspended rotor, part of electric power used for rotor suspension and drive was converted into heat. The rotor assemble that turning at a very high speed would also cause air disturbance, then leaded to temperature raise of the magnetic suspended rotor. Some rotor assemble parts such as catching bearings and thrust plane were another causes of temperature raise of the magnetic suspended rotor. Under the synthesize influence mentioned above the temperature raise and distribution of temperature field is different with the different mechanical structure even when the driving power is equal. Temperature raise will cause thermo-expansion and reduce the accuracy of the rotor assemble. At the extreme condition the normal operation will be disturbed by thermo-distort of rotor assemble and stator. Temperature field measurement has significance to the study the mechanism of temperature raise of a magnetic suspended rotor. The establishment of three dimension (3D) digital model of a magnetic suspended rotor provides a method to research the relation between temperature raise and mechanical structure and offers a powerful research platform for further research of a magnetic suspended rotor.This paper presents the magnetic suspended rotor's working principle, application and development status. The temperature field of the magnetic suspended rotor has been analyzed and calculated theoretically. Firstly, the principle, process and instruments for temperature field measurement of the magnetic suspension rotor are introduced. The temperature field thermographic images of a magnetic suspended rotor taken by infrared camera are illustrated. The temperature curve along particular line on the surface of the magnetic suspended rotor is given. Secondly, the origin point calibration for infrared camera in order to diminish the system error is performed and at the same time some precautions should be taken to guarantee measuring quality is also mentioned. Thirdly, the post processing of the measurement data is discussed. Noise filter and curve draw up are used to diminish measurement error. Combined temperature field infrared images with the mechanical structure analysis one so called data process method "particular spots filter" is bring forward in order to further approach the real condition of the magnetic suspended rotor. Finally, the optimum data were pick up and the 3D digital model of the temperature field of the magnetic suspended rotor is set up through two dimension (2D) infrared images by means of MATLAB software.
