It is very important for the safety operation of a nuclear power plant toresearch the thermal stratification and temperature fluctuation phenomena whichcaused by the cold water injecting into the branch pipe connected with theemergency core cooling system (ECCS) and filled with hot water. The thermalstratification phenomena in a ECCS branch pipe is simulated using the CFD codeCFX in which the k ? ε model is adopted. The numerical results are in goodagreement with the experimental ones. By changing the flowrate of the leaked coldwater, the structure of the branch pipe and the location of leakage, the inherentrelations between these parameters and the thermal stratification phenomena werefurther researched. Therefore, the main cause and some characteristics of thephenomena were investigated.
