With the rapid development of expressway, semi-rigid asphalt pavement were widely used and researched in China. The pavement performance of the expressway constructed during early age is decreasing with age due to traffic load and climate environment and so on, and it has brought tremendous economic loss and bad effect on society. Therefore, it has better social and economic value to develop and research superior performance asphalt mixture that can prevent rutting and crack effectivel, and the use life of road will be prolonged consequently.Based on different performance requirements for different layer, sthis paper investigates superior performance asphalt mixture systematically by large numerbers of lab and field tests.Firstly, 11 kinds of graduations have been designed by several methods and a series of performance-based test are carried out to analyze the characteristics of Marshall stability, high temperature rutting, low temperature crack resistance, water stability of bituminous mixture which have different graduation. To obtain the OAC of asphalt mixture different methods were used, example for marshall method, superpave method and GTM design method, in the same time, these methods were compared deeply, and then, some rational advice about graduation and OAC design were provided for superior performance asphalt mixture.Secondly, the super flexible asphalt mixture was designed evaluated for the bottom layer. Lab reflective crack simulation test and impactive tenacity/toughness test and fatigue test were carried on to analyze the effect on fatigue resistance and anti-re flective crack perfomance of different granduation and binder, and to establish the relation between different test method. The test results show that the super flexible asphalt mixture is a kind of superior performance asphalt which can mitigate reflective crack and be fatigue resistance and can be used on the bottom layer.Thirdly, the high strength asphalt mixture was designed and evaluated for the surface and medial layer. The performance of four kinds of binders (original 70# binder, original 50# binder, SBS modified binder and high strength modified binder) was tested. A series of performance-based test are also carried out to analyze the characteristics of high temperature stability, low temperature crack resistance, water stability of bituminous mixture which have different binder and graduation. The test results indicate that the pepetural asphalt mixture can be adopted primely on the sufface or medial layer.Finally, some applications and field tests were performed in order to evaluate the performance of superior performance asphalt mixture, and some construction technics and notice proceedings were summarized through test road.
