The design datum of hydraulic turbines in hydropower stations which were built in early stage of our country, were mainly from the former Soviet Union early time technologies and materials due to the limitation of technology at that time. Thus the performance index of most units was backward, the type selection design was unreasonable, and severe cavitation destructions and bad stability problems appeared. These problems are already seriously threatened safety in production and economical operation of the unit and power station. Therefore, retrofit of these hydraulic turbine equipments has become an extremely urgent duty.The Guanan Gaoqiao Hydropower Station uses the former Soviet Union 1940s HL82 hydraulic turbines. The energy index and overflow ability of this hydraulic turbine are obviously low. According to the hydraulic parameters of this station, this article analyzes the HL82 Francis hydraulic turbine. The analyzing results show that the type selection of hydraulic turbine in this power station was unreasonable, so retrofit runner design scheme is proposed.In view of the hydraulic parameters of this station, without changing the original HL82-WJ-60 flow passage, satisfying cavitation and stabilityrequirements, according to traditional runner blade design theory ωu=0 , thisthesis has designed an improved runner blade which is suit to the Guanan Gaoqiao Hydropower Station. The hydraulic turbine generator output has been enhanced greatly. The author also carries on numerical simulation and performance test to the interior flow of the retrofit hydraulic turbine by Fluent software, and the results show that the hydraulic turbine efficiency has obviously increased, the cavitation performance improved.
