With the improvement of people's living standard, the demand of domestic water, especially the water quality of drinking water is becoming larger. The key way to solve this problem is to improve the water treatment technology. Sedimentation is a very important process in the water supply treatment;a large number of suspended solids can be removed in this process. The whole process will be influenced by the effect of sedimentation. In this paper, it studies the rectangular settling tanks in the waterworks. In this paper, based on the analysis and summarization of study results on settling tanks by predecessors, a mathematical model for predicting the velocity and suspended solids transport in rectangular settling tanks is developed. Using SIMPLE algorithm for a non-orthogonal collocated grids variable arrangement, the variables can be solved. Then, the current field and the consistency distribution are finally simulated. Compare the different operating conditions, some advices about both the structural optimizations and the operating parameters are concluded. The simulation result shows that the elimination efficiency is affected by the structural optimizations of the rectangular settling tanks. In this paper, three kinds of suggested values of structural optimizations which are the fractional areas of valve holes in perforated wall, the depth of the tanks and the length of collecting annulus are promoted. In this paper, lots of operating conditions are also simulated in different inlet concentration and different flow. Based the results, the operating parameters can be adjusted rationally to accord with the regulation.
