Aarchitecture Study On The Grotto Temples Of Tang And Song Dynasties In Shaanxi

With the spread of Buddhism from India into China, this foreign religious building style was rooted in China. Then, influenced by Chinese Buddhist doctrine and traditional Chinese architectural style, it completed a progressive Chinese localization process. And a Chinese grotto temple architectural art was formed. in Sui , Tang and Song Dynasties, the grotto cutting reached its peak in Shaanxi region. Massive grotto monasteries still remain in this region.Their artitectural styles are full of local characteristics and have an important research value.In this thesis, the grotto temple of Tang and Song Dynasties in Shaanxi is taken as the main research topic. First, the development of the Chinese grotto temple and the basic constructional styles are outlined,which are taken as background information of the entire research work. Second, beginning from examples of the typical grotto temple,the study are explored on the follwing issues: First, the background knolwdges of the construction of the grotto temple in Tang and Song Dynasties in Shaanxi is analyzed;This paper has done a comparative study on the grotto temple of Tang and Song Dynasties in Shaanxi and Chinese timber Buddhist temple for the external environment and the development of patterns of construction groups;secondly, the influence of religionious ceremony on the constructional space is studied, and starting with the individual construction styles of the grotto temple, the salient types of the grotto temple in Tang and Song Dynasties within Shaanxi province is analyzed with profits from extant example of wooden Buddhist temples, then the design root of the artitectural art of the Shaanxi gotto temple is discussed. In addition, a cognitive analysis is also applied to study the local feature of the sculpture art in the grotto temple of Tang and Song Dynasties in Shaanxi.Through the research approach above, it can be concluded as follows: First, the development rule and characteristic of the Shaanxi grotto Temple of Tang and Song Dynasty in building site selection, building constructing and building arrangement.Second, Chinese timber Buddhis temple's influence on the Shaanxi grotto Temples of Tang and Song Dynasty in structures, space, the building design origin of grotto temple of Tang and Song Dynasty in Shaanxi is explored. Third, the typical style of sculpture art of the Shaanxi grotto temple of Tang and Song Dynasty is summarized.
