Control of soil and water loss on the Loess plateau emphasizes on oversand and coarse sandy area, Silt-arrester dam is the key to the object. But dam designing in small watershed is a complicated engineering, usually, design with traditional method is labored and time consuming. On one hand, technological difficulty exists in determining the number and flood routing for dam system. On the other hand, for dam system security and stability, single dam's designing should take flood control standard of dams, hinge composing, building sequence as well as years of filling up into account. The research mainly explore the method combining Geographic Information System (GIS), Computer Aided Design(CAD) and traditional technology of soil and water conservation to optimize the design of dams. Discussing the index, object, technological route and analysis models in the design process of dams. Collecting enough quantity and densities three-dimensional coordinates of characteristic points on the earth's surface with total station. seting up the digital elevation model(DEM) with Region Manager. Extracting terrain data automatically with spatial analysis function of GIS, then plan the dam system on 3D simulating DEM, single dam is being designed in the virtual gullies by ways of humen-computer interaction, and output the engineering drawings. Comparison between designing by the system and manual work proves the feasibility of the silt- arrester designing system.
