With the prominent advantages of SRC structures and the development of seismic design philosophy, performance based seismic design (PBSD) philosophy has been widely accepted by experts of earthquake engineering. Combined with PBSD of RC buildings , the test research of SRC frame systems and finite element numerical analysis of SRC frames and components, the deformation limits of SRC frame systems are presented for four different performance levels.The theory and recommendations about performance-based seismic design for RC and SRC buildings in home and abroad are reviewed. According to the situation of our country, performance levels, limit states and failure criteria for PBSD of SRC frame systems were outlined in this paper.Based on the existing test studied on SRC frames and components, the range of deformation of SRC columns are developed for four different performance levels. The main parameters, such as shear-span ratio, axial compressive ratio, stirrup ratio, steel ratio etc, which have great effect on the seismic deformation performance of SRC columns, are also discussed. Meanwhile, compared to RC columns, the failure process and mode of SRC columns are presented. As a result, the failure characteristic and criteria for PBSD of SRC frame and columns are introduced.
