With the development of science and technology, light and high-strength building materials are widely used and at the same time lots of complex shape buildings are coming forth. So according to the load codes, it is difficult to obtain the characteristics of wind loads on complex shape buildings. Based on the project of Chongqing Grand Theater, wind loads on complex shape buildings are analyzed by means of the combination of wind tunnel test and numerical simulation. The study is mainly focused on the following aspects:(1) The design of model and the scheme of wind tunnel test are carried on. Aimed at the difficulty about the layout of pressure points on the surface of complex shape buildings, the distributions of wind pressure on buildings are estimated by means of numerical simulation before wind tunnel tests, and then it is realized to optimize the locations of pressure points.According to the practices, the above methods are reasonable and effective.(2) In order to make the comparison between the application of project and the codes more convenient, the formula for the pressure coefficient C pand the shape coefficientμsis derived in this paper, which takes the mountainous terrain into account.(3) The experiment of measuring wind pressure on the surface of Chongqing Grand Theater is carried out in the boundary layer wind tunnel (BLWT). Based on the experiment data, the characteristics of the wind load distribution on the surface of the building are obtained, when the building is under the different conditions, such as various wind directions or different terrains. The max (min) wind pressure values of once for 50(100) years are also calculated.(4) The wind environment around Chongqing Grand Theater is measured. According to the ratio of wind velocity k, the wind environment around the building is evaluated.(5) Based on the software of Fluent6.1, the model is built reasonablely and calculated, its results have a good meet with the experiment data. The practices show that numerical simulation can provide a lot of help during the wind tunnel tests.
