The dam base against sliding stability is important contents for design of gravity dam. Geological conditions of Wudu gravity dam is complex, there are natural slip pathway due to faults inclining in the upstream and downstream and many interformational disturbed belts. Therefore the sliding stability of dam base along weak interlayer is concerned. Combined with the practical project of Wudu hydropower station, this paper studies the stability of Wudu's typical monolith by 3-Dgeomechanical model test and nonlinear FEM analysis. Model test theory and finite element method is applied to the study of dam base stability. The distribution of displacement and stress and the yield process of dam base are studied. The main contents and results of this paper include:1.The research methods of dam base sliding stability are systematically summarized and contrasted. The superiority of the combination of physical model and mathematical model is submitted. The principle and methods of geological model test and FEM are presented.2.The paper analyse 16#,17# dam of displacement and stress and dam base working character by Ansys software. Dam base stability is analysed by overload method. The research results indicate: First, both of two monolith are safe in the reservoir-empty and normal operation condition, only part of faults failure in shear; Second, overloading, the overloading safety factor of 16# dam is 2.8, dam base failure plane is formed by fault 10f2 and f101 and dam base surface, the overloading safety factor of 17# dam is 2.2, dam base failure plane is formed by fault 10f2 and f114.3.The nonlinear FEM is adopted to study the displacement distribution of Wudu gravity dam under practical foundation, which results are compared with that...
