The contact problem is a kind of common, complicated and typical non-linear problem. It is difficult to solve it by traditional mathematic and mechanical methods, so the numerical value analysis is used. With the development of the numerical value method, the simulation technology of numerical value analysis is applied widely and improved. The contact problem is common in the hydropower and rock engineering. The key to solve this problem is to establish the mathematic and mechanical model reflecting contact characters. The following are the main research contents in this paper:First, the paper summarizes the development of the research about the contact problem and the stability against sliding of gravity dam. Introduce the basic theory about elastic-plastic non-linear problem;define contact problem by mathematic model, introduce some finite element model about contact problem;discuss the solutions about contact problem. It is mostly developed to analyze a new and stable solution about contact problem—direct constraint procedure. The example are show the direct constraint procedure base on contact mechanics in this paper reflects better the structure contact character, so it can common apply on all kinds of contact problem analysis in the engineering structures.Second, the methods about stability analysis of gravity dam are studied. It compares the rigid limit equilibrium method with the finite element method. It bring forward apply contact model on the stability against sliding analysis of gravity dam. It discuss the methods about the anti-sliding safety factor solutions.Last, it analysis and estimates the stability against sliding of xiangjiaba dam as engineering application. Base on the geologic formation and the character about mechanics;Found the finite element contact model that accord with fact. Analysis it stress and deformation state under common work situation;Use overload method and safety reduction method calculating safety factor against sliding;Compare results that calculated by each finite element model;Compare result that calculated by rigid limit equilibrium method with result that calculated by finite element contact model;the sensitivity about fault material strength is analysis, and propose the reinforcement project.
