Presently, in our country we mainly apply the manual ultrasonic to detect the locomotive wheelsets. By this way we can predict the remanent life of the wheelset to a degree. But it can not detect the whole body of the wheelset ,the process of detecting mainly depends on the operators' experience , many errors are made.This paper presents a new ultrasonic flaw detection method for the locomotive wheelsets. The method can detect the whole body of wheelsets through the special container with the probes , the container can high precisely adjust the slant angle of the probes. Based on the method we devise the corresponding automatic ultrasonic flaw detector. The device aquries , processes and shows the ultrasonic signal through the digital signal acquisition and process unit based on PCI hardware and Windows 2000 software platform. It can automaticly finish the whole detecting process controlled by IPC and manage the results with database. Through the DAQ card with FIFO we get the real time response in Windows 2000 operating system.At last, we make faults in the the axle of DF11G through spark machining and carry out experimentations to test the detector . The results show that the system has strong detecting faults ability and can stably work under dynamic test and all channels working together.
