Wheel-set is the important component of locomotive and one of the major factors affecting running safety of trains. Especially with the development of implement of over loading and increasing speed stratagem of trains, wheel-set run in worse condition and wheel-set trouble is on the increase evidently. At one time complex structure and area of weariness crack (including Whole suspension hollow axis of swivel, half suspension adopted axletree, substituting holistic grinding steel wheels for wheel-hoop compounded wheels, different wheel-axletree structure of different locomotives, different transmission chamfer machining step of axletresses and driven traction gear etc.. ) centralizing make wave clutter and repeat to disturb recognition of real fault wave. At present manual ultrasonic that have been used in railway application department far and wide meets the needs: predicting remanent life of locomotive wheel-sets by defaults, improving reliability of wheel-sets and efficient measurements insuring running safety of locomotive.In this paper bring forward to the whole project of smart ultrasonic flaw detection system for locomotive wheel-sets. System synthetically uses digital ultrasonic flaw detection technique, computer technique, auto control technology and constructs intact hardware system; constructs software system including complete locomotive wheel-set graphics base, diagnosis document database, checkout result database and smart analysis module by investigation, summarization, test, theory analysis etc.. many new methods are produced through research of detection methods for objective constructs of wheel-sets : multi-kind of waves, multi-frequency, multi-angle and combined probe etc.. Exploit smart analysis software which estimates size, position and remanent life of default and make relevant results more distinctly display in three-dimensional view. Detection results processmodule is exploited with saving, displaying and printing output for detection results, index and statistic analysis based on given condition.Smart ultrasonic flaw detection system for locomotive wheel-sets based on modern technology makes detection process automatization, graphics, standardization, and parameter document and flaw detection result analysis intelligentization. It makes detection result more exact, improves efficiency and reduces working intensity. The paper is useful exploration for exploitation and research of flaw detection equipments.
