Urban identity image theory is a new approach on the design of visual elements of cities and the identity image of a city reflects in a way the city's economy, culture, management and the life of the residents. Building a good identity image has become one of the major tasks municipal governments have to undertake in the modernization drive of their cities.Taiyuan, renowned for its long history and rich culture, is now the economic and cultural center of Shanxi Province and it needs to have its own unique identity along with the rapid development of the city. Addressing this need, the thesis, taking the corporate identity system theory for reference, first gave a description and an analysis on the urban identity system as in mind image, behavior Image and visual Image. Taking the street furniture of the city as an example, the thesis then pointed out some of the problems about the urban identity, especially on street furniture, a very important part in a urban identity image system. The analysis on street furniture will help us identify problems existing in the identity system of Taiyuan and lead us to solutions to these problems so as to improve the urban identity of Taiyuan.
