| Because of the special process about Chinese cities construction in the modern time, a large number of houses built from 80's to 90's have seriously impacted the appearance of the cities now. The reconstruction of flat roof which always means constructing a new pitched roof over the awful flat roof, for short "Flat to pitch", has been popular in many cities such as Shanghai and Hangzhou even there are lots of different opinions towards it.Jiangxi province is an inland one in China with relatively poor economy. In order to develop the province more quickly in integrative, it is necessary to beautify the appearance of its cities now. As the capital, Nanchang city had gone on some "Plat to pitch" projects, which is not so success however. How to deal with "plat-roof in such Jiangxi, a special region, is a topic closely contact with the practice. In the first chapter of the thesis it talks over the meaning of the study of the plat roof reconstruction, and presents the research will be based on the social problems in Chinese contemporary society. The following chapter discusses the concept of roof-form at first, and briefly reviews the roof evolution progress. Then it shows the causation of plat-roof problems and finds out the essential of the reconstruction. Chapter3 presents the climate and the traditional residential architecture in Jiangxi, and explores the surroundings of the residential zone which built before 90's. Chapter4 discusses the "Flat to Pitch" and another popular plat roof reconstruction method that is plant grass on the plat roof, for short "Plat to Green". Then, In order to improve the contact between neighbors, the chapter put forward a new method that is to construct a courtyard over the plat roof in which the residents can easily contact each other. In the last chapter it puts forward the principles and methods to how to determine plat roof construction and predicts the usage of plat roof open space in the future.
