In this paper, a new strengthening technique, strengthening by steel plate anchored with rivets, was introduced, in which the flexural properties were studied about the four reinforced concrete beams strengthened by steel plate anchored with rivets, one steel-bonded reinforcement beam, and one un-strengthened beam. The experiments were conducted to investigate the stressing characteristics and strengthening effect. Based on the test results, the design formulas of flexural load-carrying capacity, stiffness and maximum crack width are proposed.The experimental results showed that the strengthening by steel plate anchored with rivets had many advantages over the steel-bond reinforcement beam such as simple technology of construction execution of work and strengthening effect. The strengthening by steel plate anchored with rivets has strong engineering background.The pair-comparison testing results between the beams strengthened by steel plate anchored with rivets and the un-strengthened suitable R.C. beam, showed that the failure pattern of the former is analogous with the latter(that is ductile failure mode)on condition that the quantity of the strengthening steel plate is suitable to the beam and matches the rivets. The strengthening technique of the former improves not only the extreme capability of bending, but also enhances the crack resistance and the rigidity of beams, raises the capability of resistance to deflection.With the theoretical analysis of beams strengthened by steel plate anchored with rivets, this thesis propose the formulas to calculate the capability of bearing bending, the formulas of the deflection and the maximum crack width under short-dated loading. Compared the calculation of the formulas with the experimental results, it judges the available analytical procedure.
