In order to respond to market requirements rapidly, product variant design has become more and more important for mechanical designers. Because of the particularities of complicate product such as multi-tier architectures, complicated variant relationships among constitutes components, The variant design for complicated product was expatiated in detail. This method can be divided into three parts according to product variant design process: variant mechanism analysis of complicated product, modeling of master complicated product model and variant instance generation from master product model. Several key technologies were expanded too. Finally a prototype variant design system was developed according to enterprise's conditions, and then the variant design process of SJ758 series rapier loom using this system was introduced. Main contents including:Chapter I firstly introduces the research background of project, and concerned technologies of product variant design. At the same time, it figures out the research contents and organization frame of this thesis.Chapter II introduces the method of variant design for complicated product. The method of analysis of variant mechanism for complicated product, method of modeling on master complicated product model and principle of variant instance generation from master product model were presented. Method of variant mechanism analysis of complicated product includes product requirement analysis, product & component modularization analysis, component ABC analysis, component geometry shape analysis, product & component variant parameter analysis and variant relationship analysis. Master complicated product model includes product family GBOM(Generic Bill of Material, GBOM), master product 3D model, tree-like variant parameter transfer structure and master product info model. Principle of variant instance generation from master product model includes principle of 3D instance generation from master product 3D model, principle of product configuration and principle of info instance generation from master product info model.Chapter III expands several key technologies concerned during variant design process of complicated product including analysis of variant parameters, analysis of variant relationship among constitutes components, modeling structure of master product 3D model, tree-like variant parameter transfer structure and tabular layouts of article characteristics as well as product knowledge database.Chapter IV introduces the development of prototype variant design system including program analysis and program design. The data flow and entity relation of system were explained in detail.
