Acoustic wave is the only information carrier which can propagate long distances in sea water. Acoustic positioning technique plays an important role in ocean environment observation, bottom surveying, resources prospecting and underwater communication. It has a wide outlook in ocean engineering applications.It is necessary for the research on sound propagation in the sea to model the acoustic field with proper sound propagation model. And the accurate propagation model is the basis of underwater acoustic positioning. Ray model is one of the conventional sound propagation models, which is simple, intuitionistic and suitable for all kinds of signals and can work in range-dependent environments. So the ray model is an important sound propagation model of underwater acoustic positioning systems.In this paper, finite state machine is established to model the sound ray tracing which formulates the internal states and transitions of sound ray propagation. And an approximation process method is adopted for eigenrays finding. A set of programs for sound ray calculating is proposed, which can calculate the traces and the travel time of the rays in the 2-D sound field and search the eigenrays arrival at the receiving point. The programs adopt stratified constant-gradient method to approximately describe the sound velocity distribution. Simulation results show that the sound ray solving method has good calculating speed and precision.
