The present paper mainly studies the application of new techniques to the landscape design in modern residential areas in the light of humanism, environment and design esthetics. It aims to explore the new conceptions, new thinking and new method system fitting in with the macro background of the urban development in China and the present situation.This paper focuses on the three aspects: 1. technical design—a study on the interaction and rule between the development the science and technology and the design of modern landscape; 2. the relationship of the residents in the urban residential area—a study on the terrain and environmental structure, social activities and cultural psychological characteristics; 3. the means of combining modern landscape design and historical tradition.In this paper, the landscape design of the urban residential areas will be analyzed both diachronically and synchronically. The diachronic study is expected to reveal the development and influence of technical means on the landscape design, which is intended to provide profound foundation for both the theoretical study and practice, while the synchronic study will analyze the interaction of the elements of various levels, such as social culture, economic technology and material environment, as well as the their impact on the landscape design.Finally, the paper provides a design of the modern landscape architecture by both technical and artistic means in the hope of optimizing residential landscape environment, creating visual pleasure, and meeting the demand of the residents at various levels, such as cultural connotation, esthetic style and functional properties.
