Huge investment has been spent in construction of Expressway since 1990s, which does a great help to Chinese economy.The failure of road cutting slope is becoming a serious threat as Expressway extends its way into hilly area. Many factors have impacts on the slope stability, and most of them have random property. It is meaningful to set research on failure mechanism of the road cutting slope and put forth treatments of slopes in different geotechnical environments.We usually judge slope stability by its safety parameters. However, safety parameters don't consider the random property to the slope stability. In this paper, structure reliability theory are applied to research the slope stability. Firstly, the article studies the stability of road cutting slope with examples, and put forward treatments according to its nature, cause of formation, thickness and the degree of harmness.Secondly, based on reliability theory, the failure mechanism of road cutting slope is analyzed.Combining the back analysis method and reliability, a simple and practical thought is presented to select mechanical parameters of rock and soil. Incorporating finite element analysis and dynamic programming technique, a new method is introduced to ascertain the most dangerous slide surface of road cutting slope and the reliability index. On the foundation of system reliability theory, a research is put on the rode cutting slope with several slide surfaces.The research results are of practical meaning to judgement of slope stability and treatment of the failure slope.
