Along with the coming stringent emission control regulations, the domestic motorcycle industry has brought forward a lot of technology solve methods, among which the Engine Management System is taken as one of the most effective methods. In this paper, in order to meet the demands of the EUROШemission regulations and On Board Diagnostics, an Infineon's excellent microcontroller, XC164CM, and intelligent power units are used to develop an ECU for a two-cylinder motorcycle EMS, including the ECU hardware, the control strategy and software development and the CAN&KWP2000 based calibration work. The ECU hardware can support two cylinder independent fuel injection, independent ignition control, stepper motor drive, fuel pump drive, O2 heater drive, measurements of intake temperature, barometric pressure, manifold pressure and battery, CAN/KW2000 communication, check engine light drive. The dedicated circuit can protect the ECU and detect the faults. The control strategies, including angle-speed and pressure-speed based operation determination method for fueling and ignition, are studied, and A/F closed-loop control, idle closed-loop control, OBD diagnosis method and management of fuel pump and O2 heater are implemented. After the basic software functions are developed, the ECU is tested on Hardware-In-Loop test equipment. Finally, a lot of bench tests on a 125 ml single cylinder motorcycle and a 125ml two cylinder motorcycle are calibrated. Satisfied dynamical performance and emissions results are achieved.
