The entrance of navigation constructions, that is the junction of the ship-lock approach channel and the river or canal, and which plays a ligament role in the entrance of ship lock and watercourse with free navigation, is the gullet of which the ships or fleet pass the ship-lock approach channel. Normally, if there is an angle between approach channel and main watercourse, there is the complex flow which acts on the shipside at the outlet area, and which infects the safety of the navigations, it is the oblique flow. Because of the oblique flow, the ships are distorted, intensively shaken and bumpily deviated, finally, will offset the navigation's channel. Therefore, after all kinds of hydraulics are designed, the scale model is founded in order to show the flow conditions and find out the elements with influence of flow condition at outlet area, analyzing the cause of the oblique flow, presenting corresponding improving measures on the flow condition of outlet area, that is practically significant.Approach channel of YingShang's Ship lock is taken example in the paper. The scale model is founded to research the flow condition and present corresponding improving measures. However, the mathematical model is developed to explore and solve it. The results show: both the scale model and the mathematical model could correctly simulate the flow pattern at outlet area of approach channel with the different compounding of flux and water level. The results are in line with the measured data very well, which indicates that the scale model and the mathematical model are valid and credible.Based on model-study for approach channel of YingShang's ship lock, it is found that the oblique flow of outlet area couldn't meet requirements of navigation, then three modification projects are put forward, and correspondingly numerical calculation and model test are done. The results show: 1) for the first modification project, the oblique flow of outlet area couldn't meet requirements of navigation; 2) for the second one, ships could safely pass the outlet area of approach channel at median and low flux. There is large circumfluence area at lower outlet area of approach channel with higher flux; 3) the third one could effectively reduce circumfluence area, ships could safely pass outlet area of approach channel. Because the probability of flux of more than 2000 m~3/s is low, the second one is economical and rational.
