With the centralized and large-scale development of the laboratory, the tow problems which we face are energy consume and safety of the people in laboratory, which are the same to the designer of the ventilation system in laboratory. A safe and energy saving ventilation system is based on sufficient knowledge of the designer to the environment in laboratory. The application of local exhaust equipments in laboratory adds the indetermination in design. Fume hood, as a typical local exhaust equipment, research on its safety and energy saving is very important to solve the problem in laboratory. At first, author describes the construction, conception and operation principle of fume hood. Then introduce the safety and energy saving of this equipment. Fume hood is an equipment that contain contamination in the hood and then exhaust it to the outside to keep the safe environment. But the contain capability is affected by many factors, some from itself and some from the environment. Only apprehend the relation between all factors and the equipment, fume hood would be used accurately in laboratory.Fume hood is an equipment which need much energy. It always exhausts large air-conditioning air and make a large waste in energy. In order to save energy, the exhaust volume of fume hood should be controlled according to different conditions. In the thesis, author introduces some control methods which have different principle, different controller and different accuracy and delicacy. And the control method of fume hood is an important part of laboratory ventilation control system. If designer want to plan a proper ventilation system in laboratory, it is necessary to understand the control methods.
