Water mist technology has been found more advantages such as not contaminating the environment,not destroying the ozone layer,not bringing green house effect,extinguishing fasterly,low consumption,and be safe to the man and other protected objects. According to the SOLAS convention,the fixed water-base local fire fighting system was added,so to the ship,it becomes the necessary part of the modern ship for water mist fire extinguishing system. Because the application of the marine water mist fire extinguishing system in our country starts late,the domestic equipments in ships occupy few proportion,but the research in this field in abroad has tended in perfect,so the research and developing our own ship's water mist fire extinguishing system have become the urgent matter. The research of this paper is based on the new traing ship's engine room fixed local water mist fire extinguishing system of DMU,in this paper ,the design of the fire fighting system for the main engine and other protection field is researched,and it will be very valuable and meaningful in promoting the applying of technology in our country.Firstly, the outline of the water mist fire extinguishing system's development and its current research background are introduced in this thesis. Emphases are put on the overview about the extinguishing mechanisms, technical characteristics and engineering applications of the system. Atomization law and atomization properties of swirl nozzle is elaborated, the formulation of theory of swirl nozzle is given. We analyse atomization properties of swirl nozzle through simulation.Based on atomization law, extinguishing mechanism of water mist and the component of water mist fire extinguishing system, marine pump local water mist fire extinguishing system is developed. The principle of work, main technical parameter and movement process of water mist is expatiated in the thesis.
