Cranes with telescopic boom are the main forms of mobile cranes. They have been applied to lots of engineering fields in national economy. The weight of the telescopic boom almost takes 20% of the total weight of crane. So, lightening the boom weight and improving the strength, rigidity and stability are the main ways to improve the capability of telescopic boom. Designing the boom is completed mostly by hand in past. Its characteristics are repeated calculating, lower efficiency and longer periods. With the progress of the computer's application techniques, gradually computer is used to design the crane boom, but the programs are programmed in DOS environment and insufficient in maneuverability. Therefore, designing a software, whose extent of visualization is higher, become more and more necessary.In this paper, the design software based Visual C++ for the telescopic boom is presented. Aiming at the popular hexagonal section in the market and traditional box-section, the software enables parameter-varying drawing, interactive determining of the boom variables and drawing the contour curve of the von stress of the telescopic boom's dangerous sections, and it can improve the design efficiency and quality of the boom. The paper presents the operating method of the software and tests the application of the program by a concrete instance.
