The method of buried cooling pipes is one of best efficiency way to control the temperature; the water flow in cooling pipe is used to reduce the temperature rise caused by the heat of hydration of the cement in concrete dams. The method has been widely used in dam construction to control temperature around the world. However, to achieve the three-dimensional simulation analysis of the cooling pipes, a great deal of time and the high-level computers are in great request. In this paper, the substructure theory was used to study the effects of the cooling pipes. The cooling effect was investigated within fine limits, the calculate formulas were reasoned methodically and logically, the subprogram of cooling pipes was composed in FORTRAN,the calculate models was established based on the three-dimensional finite element theory. In the meantime, the subprogram was integrated successfully into the Three-dimensional Finite Element Relocating Mesh Method Program for Roller Compacted Concrete Dam(RCCD),which can achieve the three-dimensional simulation analysis of the temperature field and the stress field of the whole dam.Based on a project, the author studied the feasibility of continual construction of a RCCD buried cooling pipes in advancee during the second highest temperature season. The simulation was made by the program, the result of the temperature field and stress field during construction as well as after construction was achieved. It shows that it is possible to construct the dam buried cooling pipes in advancee duying the second highest temperature season. The result of subprogram using substructure theory was compared with the traditional method and the monitoring data of a project. The conclusion is that the subprogram using substructure theory is accurate and correspond with the actual conditions. In addition, based on project, the author analyzed the influence of the water flowing upon the dam and gave a useful advice to the construction of the project.
