With China's rapid socioeconomic development, Rhythm of modern life has also increasingly accelerated, it has been found that some environmental signs in the city has lost many of its roles and become unable to meet people's needs. This dissertation first discussed the significance of the research, defined the content and methods, thus entered the perspectives and objectives of the research, and then constructed a reasonable framework for research as a whole. The article expounded the form design elements of the environmental signs from the aspects of the scale, carriers, visual angle and lighting, studied and analyzed the characteristics of the various classifications of the sign system in urban environment, then focused on the requirements need to meet and problems need to avoid in the design process. Next, related to the seven principles of universal design, explored the ideas of using them in environmental sign system, reaffirmed the scientific concept "people-oriented", then studied the need for universal design from the relationship between human and environmental signs, raised the view that barrier-free design grows into universal design in urban construction. Finally, tried to integrate examples of Nanjing subway sign system, through the investigation and analysis of the current status summed up their success and inadequacies, and then further explore the future development trend of urban environmental sign system.Today, the sign design are gaining increasing attention and concern, it is no longer a "no man's land" in the field of design. As a continuation and supplement of the previous research results, it is hoped that the article will bring a certain meaning to this field in the present and future time.
