Due to the excellent performances, such as quick drainage, moisture reduction, hydroplaning prevention and low noise, porous pavement has become more and more popular in the construction of HMA pavement. However, the research in porous pavement in China is only in its early stage and just a small number of test roads have been built based on this technology, that is, a lot of problems should be discussed and investigated in a further prospect, especially the hot discussed water-proof layer. This paper is mainly based on the 17-km long porous pavement paved in the YAN-TONG highway which is still under construction .With the infinite element method, the porous pavement is studied through a three-dimensional model, during which the influence the material criteria and loading style may have on the stress exiting in the water-proof layer is discussed.Considering the special location and the demanding function, a battery of tests are conducted for four different kinds of material often used in the water-proof layer, based on the result of which a proper option along with some suggestive modification of the material criteria and test procedure is recommended, In addition the potential factors influencing the bonding between layers and the influence the water-proof layer may exert on the pavement performance is also discussed. Finally, based on in-door tests and corresponding field validations, the research on both construction technology and quality control of water-proof layer is carried out in the paper. The effective quality assurance measures both during construction and during service are provided at the end of paper.
