Road traffic accident research and reconstruction are very important parts of vehicle passive safety. The traffic accident investigation department has no choice but using empirical formula to calculate the crash energy in our country. In fact, it is impossible to validate the empirical formula directly in the real car collision test, so the empirical formula does not a convincible way in the real car accident analysis. With the development of computer technology and computational mechanics, more and more numerical value computation methods are used on vehicle crash analysis. The crash problem can be regarded as a contact problem, it can be solved by the widely and successfully used finite element analysis way. The finite element analysis is suitable for a contact system with any geometry, material or deformation. Finally the problem is ascribed as numerical linear algebra problem, so that we can get an exact result. This thesis mainly presents a numerical simulation to study the side impact crash. ETA/VPG is used as the preprocessor and postprocessor while LS-DYNA is used as a non-linear finite element code. Establish regulation of side impact vehicle model was studied at first, and then a side impact vehicle model is established. At the same time, some problems such as mesh, material select, contact, time step control are discussed. Because the main energy absorbing parts of side impact crash are shells, a successive shell crush model is adopted in order to get its deformation and energy absorption characters at different thickness and velocity. After that, the ECE R95 side impact crash simulation is carried out to analyze the deformation, energy absorption, response of velocity and acceleration of the car and the dummy. The results show the influence of energy absorption to the occupant safety in the side impact crash. Above result of the simulation for the side impact crash of vehicle may provide important information for traffic accident analysis and useful reference for designers.
