With the rapid development of industry and agriculture, the pollution of raw water becomes worse and worse. On the other hand, as a result of improvement of people's living level, drinking water quality standards become more and more strict. In this situation, the conventional processes used in most water treatment works in China can hardly reliably supply the safe drinking water which can be up to the Water Quality Standard for Urban Water Supply (CJ/T206-2005). As one of various alternatives, granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption process has been generally applied in advanced countries for many years, because it is effective for the removal of organic substances, relatively economic and convenient. It is a very important task to research and application of GAC adsorption process of renovating technical processes in water works in China.Because of lack of land for polishing process constructed in most conventional water plants in China, taking into account of saving expenditure of capital for rebuilding process, reducing the cost of running and saving the area of land, this article make some primary discussion and lab research about altering conventional filter to active carbon one. The test is conducted in the second water works in Kunming. Three active carbon filtrations of different filtering layerare's thickness of 0.8 m, 1.5 m and 2.0 m are used in filtering the outflow from sedimentation basin in this study. The performances of GAC absorption for turbidity, aluminium, CODMn, UV254 and algology in various processing parameter are evaluated and compared for giving reference and foundation to the water works using the activated carbon process.During the test, the results showed: the removal of organic matters by conventional filter used in water works is poor. The removal of CODMn is 8.76% and the removal of UV254 is 21.63%. The test results show that: the removal of organic matters by the active carbon filtrations of the thickness of 0.8 m, the filtering velocity of 8 m/h and thickness of 1.5m, the filtering velocity of 10 m/h are better than ordinary filter, but for turbidity and aluminum the removal are poor, they cann't be applied in actual production. The active carbon filtrations of the thickness of 1.5 m, the filtering velocity of 8 m/h and the thickness of 2.0 m, the filtering velocity of 8 m/h and 12 m/h, the removal of organic matter, turbidity and aluminum can reach to better effect. Different combinations of activated carbon filter parameters have different results in water...
