Distribution systems connect directly with customers and have greatest influence on the reliability of power supply. It was counted that about 80% of the total customer interruptions around resulted from distribution systems. So some work is done in the research of reliability evaluation of distribution and its optimal switching devices placement in this paper. This paper is mainly as follows:1. The research contents and basic concept of distribution systems reliability is given. Then the research status of reliability evaluation and optimal switching devices placement, as well as the evolution of orthogonal design technique, are introduced in detail.2. A summarization of basic theory of distribution systems reliability is presented. At the same time, systems reliability indices formulas are introduced.3. A simplified network model based algorithm to evaluate the reliability of complex medium voltage distribution networks is proposed. To simplify the network model, the author divides the distribution network into sections due to the features of complex distribution systems. The components constituting a section exist as a whole and their failure cause same results. Then these sections are replaced by some equivalent simple branches to form the simplified network model. With the simplified network model, the fault mode can be analyzed efficiently and the result is informative.4. According to the principle of the coordination of reliability and economics, an algorithm for optimal switching device placement in distribution systems based on family eugenics is presented. Family eugenics algorithm, combining with orthogonal design technique, is the new progress of genetic algorithm. In contrast to the traditional genetic algorithm, this algorithm is more efficiently.
