Smart structures not only can support loads, but also can feel the changes of their internal and external circumstance, and then respond to them by changing their physical performance and shape. They have many advantages such as fast reaction, self-adapting, self-diagnosing and self-recovery and so on. Now they have been one of the hotspots in engineering vibration control. The piezoelectric materials can be used as sensor and actuator, which are the hard-core center of the smart constructers. Their locations and control gains have much influence in vibration suppression directly, which are one of the important issues to the smart constructers. In this thesis, the PZT sensors and actuators' position on the smart cantilever plate, and their control parameters are optimized concurrently. In terms of the characters of smart materials and piezoelectric theory, the interaction between PZT film and the plate is studied, and the dynamical model and the state equation are established. Then the optimization design model of the active vibration control for the smart cantilever plate is given by the LQR method. Based on the analysis for the first partial derivative of optimal formulation, the optimal model is solved by the MMA (method of moving asymptotes) method. At last, by solving the optimal models of smart cantilever plate with a pair of PZT sensor/actuator and smart cantilever plate with two pairs of PZT sensor/actuator using MATLAB, the optimum PZT locations and control parameters are obtained. Using the MATLAB/Simulink, the results of simulation have proved that the presented method of vibration control is effective. Finally, experimental platform for the piezoelectric cantilever plate is set up to analyzing these PZT active vibration control further.
