While our railage is making a rapid progress towards high-speed and over-loading, the accidents of fatigue fail in mental materials of locomotive are occurring time and time, which are prominently result from the minute crack's gradual development in the locomotive materials. Although the advance materials procession in present, the minute crack in the materials can hardly remove entirely. For the sake of scientificity and economy of the locomotive, it's necessary for the safe transport to estimate precisely the residual life-span of crack and to establish practical period for scanning. This paper, under the factual demand of QingDao si-fang locomotive Co.,Ltd, bases on the data that were acquired by means of test real time on the Load Relieving Groove of the Axle and discusses the possible results revolving about the rule of the crack's dimension development. The main contents of this paper are as follows: the procession of the stress spectrum, the theory about the strength of fatigue, fatigue life forecasting of crack and the estimation on reliability of the axle in serve. Before the estimation, the paper figures out the static mechanical states within the Load Relieving Groove of the axle without cracks by calculation making use of the large-scope software—ANSYS, except for the results of the estimation on the residual life-span of the crack based on the theory of the DFM, this paper cite the reliability replacing the dimension of crack as a new measurement in estimating the residual life-span based on the PFM, which ensures the previous results accuracy and improve scientificity and applicability of the calculation. Finally, this paper attaches a great deal of the result of estimation in order to be as references for the cycle for crack detection and brings up suggest for improve the life-span of the axle.
