Rectangular plates with four edges supported by the longitudinal and transverse stiffeners are the basic structural components in ship structures. The research of the ship hull's ultimate strength is based on the study of the panel's mechanic behavior. When the ship hull reaches its ultimate strength, some of its structures, including plates, are in their failure state already. The tripping behavior of thin-walled stiffeners is regarded as one of the important failure model of stiffened plate panels, because once tripping occurs the plating is left with no supporting and therefore collapse follows immediately. Study shows that tripping of stiffeners has a very important influence on the ultimate strength of the ship hull.As thin-walled bars, stiffeners in ship panels may trip around their roots. Along with the axial pressure, stiffeners may also endure the lateral pressure and the end bending moments. In this paper, an energy method is applied for analyzing the tripping behavior of thin-walled stiffeners subjected to the axial force. Taking the stiffeners and the attached plate as a whole system, a generalized characteristic value problem for tripping of...
