The Development Of Shanghai Lilong And Its Suggestions To Modern Design

The development of Shanghai from 1840 is a procedure merging the western culture and Chinese culture. Lilong in Shanghai is one of the achievements. Lilong has the characteristics both of the residential building in southern China and site plan of the western residential building, so it is the kind of residential building that can reflect the characteristics of Shanghai.In recent years, the process of urbanization is accelerating. Some traditional architecture, including Lilong has been removed or has been destroyed at certain level. At the same time, lots of residential buildings without characters are being built. The traditional scene and cultural characteristics has faded. So studying and protecting Lilong, finding new residential forms that have both the characters of Lilong and current Shanghai has become an urgent problem now.In the thesis, the author introduces every kinds of Lilong from three aspects: site plan, plan and structure after describing the geography, climate, history and culture of Shanghai. In the following steps, she analyses the process of the form development of Lilong and summarizes the directions of the process. Based on all of the above, she summarizes the directions that modern residential building should follow and analyses several examples of modern residential building in Shanghai.
