As the mass concrete structure, Roller Compacted Concrete Dam may have cracks caused by load and non-load. Thermal stress as one of factor has great significance. Thermal stress is not main design gist of temperature control measure to avoid cracks on hydraulic concrete in construction stage and operating period, but also is one of main gist of taking measure about adding reinforcement, deciding subfield about concrete and calculating stress distribution graph, after superposing external load and other load on hydraulic structure. When some dams are in cold area, the surfaces are easy to produce temperature crack because of scurvy surrounding environment. Especially when surrounding temperature drops suddenly and the dam suffers cold water, the surface of dam will produce temperature crack, indeed arousing through crack. In this paper, the author calculates and analyses the stress of the dam body in cold area during the flood season, in order to supply gist for the construction design.Based on the heat conduction theory, the finite element method theoretical formulas of temperature filed and thermal stress are deduced in this paper. Theoretical formulas,principle of three-dimensional finite element relocating mesh method and fortran language are used to compile the simulation and analysis programs of thermal field and thermal stress and to compile combined stress program considering dead load and water pressure. In the program, the effect of stratified pouring, construction interval, the change of modulus of elasticity, the adiabatic rise of temperature, the change of ambient temperature, concrete creep and the breach flow on temperature field and thermal stress field are considered. The correctness of the program has been proved by using many methods.Based on a project, the author calculates and analyses thermal field, thermal stress and combined stress of RCC gravity dam. Contrasting results of two schemes about the breach flow and no breach flow, the author has achieved generic disciplinarian about the effect of the breach flow on the dam body's stress. Through the analysis to result, a few conclusions with application value have been found to offer theoretical foundation for the temperature control.
