Wood has been used in civil-engineering for hundreds of years. As building material, wood has many unique characteristics and special uses. Fiber reinforced plastic(FRP) is a new type of material for structural engineering. FRP holds many virtues in the field of timber structure reinforcement, such as lightness, high strength, corrosion stability and excellent flexibility. In this article, two timber beams, two GFRP reinforced timber beams and two CFRP reinforced timber have been tested. The beams are loaded until collapse happens. The research emphasized on the ultimate load, deflection and cracks of the beams. According to the result of experiment, the conclusion that the flexural members can be rehabilitated and strengthened effectively with FRP reinforcement is derived. The ductility of the timber beam and the FRP reinforced timber beam is both fairly well.Based on the experimental result, a practical method to calculate the ultimate moment bearing capacities of the timber beam and FRP reinforced timber beams is proposed. The calculation results show agreement with experimental data with reasonable reliability. The mechanism of failure occurring on the timber beam and FRP reinforced timber beam have also been studied. Finally, the design method of the FRP reinforced timber beams is proposed.
