Originally designed for an annual production capacity of 660,000 tons, No. 4 and No. 5 converters of Kunming Iron & Steel Company, which own a nominal volume of 50 tons each, are discharging burned gas to air during daily operation. This results in huge waste of energy and causes serious environmental pollution. Calling for further development, the steel making process has been improving continuously. Now the annual capacity of these two converters have reached 1, 320, 000 tons and have a potential to put out 1, 500,000 tons products each year. So the old converter gas dedusting and recycling system could hardly meet the requirements for productivity development. In order to ensure safer operation and recycle converter gas, save energy, lower costs and reduce environmental impact, it' s necessary to make technical modifications for original dedusting and recycling systems of converter gas.The paper analyses the actual condition of Kunming Iron & Steel Company. Based on dedusting engineering, it makes a proposal to modify the old dedusting and recycling systems of converter gas by calculating systematic parameters, selecting main equipment type and providing system layout drawings and main dedusting equipment drawings. And also it makes a preliminary design description for the related auxiliary facility. Budget estimate and economic evaluation for the modification are also covered in the paper. This modification is one of the technical measures for further development of steel making plants in Kunming Iron & Steel Company, it' s in compliance with national policies of energy reuse and environment protection. It' ll ensure safe operation, recycling of converter gas and energy after implementation. It would improve working and healthy conditions and air quality around steel making plants. It would gain economic profits, social benefits and environmental friendly results.
