With the rapid development of power industry, the problem of reactive power control is becoming increasingly serious as time goes on, which becomes the major problem that may cause system instability and deterioration of voltage quality. Static Var Compensator (SVC) is more and more used in electric power system; in order to improve the voltage control techniques, an advanced scheme based on SVC is introduced in this thesis. The thesis is focused primarily on various components of SVC control and protection, as well as the operating principles and the control techniques of voltage regulation for SVC's controllers. A nonlinear model for a single-machine infinite-bus system with SVC is established. Then the fuzzy sliding model control scheme is proposed to improve voltage stability. The fuzzy logic theory is introduced in the design of the variable structure controller, Finally, the proposed algorithms are verified by simulation using MATALB/SIMULINK. The results show the controller is rather simple and yet efficient, that the voltage stability is obviously improved by the control system of SVC.
