Thyristor Controlled Series Compensation(TCSC) is one of the most important FACTS technologies. This dissertation focuses on the characteristics of TCSC installation, active overvoltage protection and control.The dissertation builds a transient mathematical model by using"topology"approach and studies characteristics of installation in time constant, synchronous signal, closed loop control and interzone transition by means of digital simulation. After these, the active overvoltage protection conception is introduced. Based on the strategies which TCSC bypass lasts for 10ms, then turns into inductive operating region by normal delay angle, the capacitor overvoltage can be restricted and the short circuit current can be reduced. Effective strategies for reducing short circuit and protecting capacitor after short fault happened in power system have been given.
