| Thyristor controlled series compensation (TCSC), for its continuous control,can improve characters of power system in many aspects,so it's potential is very great in electrical power system. But for its complexity in internal structure, inevitably it will affect traditional power system protection greatly. Therefore, it is necessary to study the influences of TCSC and review the adaptation of TCSC on the existing relay protection.At first, the article researched the internal structure and theory. Then analysed the influence of series capacitor to transmission lines,such as voltage, current and protection devices based on different theory. Additionally, researched the influence of series capacitor to distance protection. For problems of distance protection in transmission lines with series capacitor, such as small protection extension, protection devices refuse to act with faults in and faulted act with faults out, the article advanced resolvent, and by simulation validated its correctness.
