A Study Of Urban Old Industrial District Renewal Based On Urban Design Strategy

Since the middle period of the 20th.century, there has been an adjustment of industrial structure tendency emerging across the world, as a result of the development of the new technology of production, communication, transportation and so on. The traditional industry, storage, port and railway station have moved from the downtown area outwards gradually, so the old industrial area that was once occupied for these important facilities has begun to decline or decompose. On the other hand, urban population has increased sharply, which has caused the intension of the land resources in the city and forced people to seek the new development space. Though structural decline appeared in the old industrial district of city, its superior position conditions, relatively cheap land cost, and the unique view environment have attracted a large amount of investing and developing and have formed an upgrading movement of the old industrial district. The renewal of the old industrial district in early times pursued the economic benefits one-sidedly, adopted the way of pushing over and rebuilding, which has ignored the use value still possessed in numerous industry's legacies and industrial architecture , and has caused the fracture of the pulse of history of old industrial district. In recent years, with the development of thought of sustainable development in the field of planning, people gradually realize the meaning of resource reuse to the sustainable development in the old industrial district and the unique culture and view value of that district. Therefore, the study of the old industrial district renewal and the reuse of the industrial architecture have been paid much attention.Urban design method is a technological means to upgrade and regenerate the old industrial district. The uniqueness of the introduction of urban design strategy lies in joining more culture and the aesthetics meaning into the urban design concerned people and urban physical relation and urban construction of living space, and deeply act on the urban renewal in the respects of space environment and human behavior. Resort to urban design, people can realize the integration and connection between the design and the goal. While creating strong culture atmosphere and environmental quality in the city, not merely bring the improvement of the investment environment of urban economy, revitalize economic development, and help to form the good social cohesiveness and sense of ownership, promote the regenerating the society, economy, culture.Through the theoretical research and practical summary of the domestic and international old industrial district renewal, the paper defines the profound function that the urban design upgrades to the city in space environment. According to the realistic state of the old industrial district renewal, combining the implementation type of the old industrial district renewal, taking into the consideration of close connection between the urban design itself and urban culture background, this paper tries to set up a relatively complete urban design frame of upgrading the old industrial district into a culture siteand proves it through the case study of Shanxi steel plant.
