The design of beam-column connections of steel structures is a very important and complicated step in steel structures design. In America's Northridge earthquake in 1994 and the Japan's Kobe earthquake in 1995, the connections of steel frame structures had been widely broken because of brittle failure, and the beams were not appeared apparent plastic deformation. Since then, people found out that it is not fully studied the performance of beam-column connection. New methods must be researched to improve the performance of beam-column connections to avoid brittle failure.Beam-column connections of steel structures with side plate reinforced beam flanges are researched in this paper. Utilizing the software ANSYS, Connections of steel structures with side plate reinforced beam flanges are simulated and analyzed using nonlinear finite element method. The seismic performances of beam-column Connections with side plate reinforced beam flanges are also analyzed. In the analysis process, the influences of geometry and material nonlinear are involved. In order to verify the effectively of the software ANSYS, this paper using the software ANSYS simulates a modal of beam-column connection with side plate reinforced beam flanges of a document to compare the results. According to the compute results, the ANSYS infinite modal can be used to analyze the performance of Beam-Column connections of steel structures with side plate reinforced beam flanges under cycle loading.Based on the principle of seismic design of strong column -weak beam, a number of different beam-column connections with different width and length side-plate are designed in this paper. Lateral and cycling loads researches of Specimens are carried out elastic-plastic finite analysis. The performances of the connections are studied, including stiffness, strength, ductility, dissipative capacity and failure forms. From the results we can see, beam-column connections of steel structures with side plate reinforced beam flanges have better dissipative capacities, stabilized and fullness curves of cycle loading, also good performance and high bearing capacities. At last, through the analysis of stress nephograms, the developing of plastic zone is discussed. The researches show, Plastic ream of beam-column connections with side plate reinforced beam flanges can be moved to the end of the side-plate and the stress of butt welds are decreased, reaching the strong column and weak beam principle. This paper researches the influence on the beam-column connections in consideration of the change in size of the side-plate, concentrating on butt weld between beam and column. The stress of the discontinuity of the beam flange is also discussed. Results are drawn, which can be referred as a foundation for further research on the priorities of side plate reinforced beam flanges connections.
