The strong earthquakes frequently happening in recent years have made the great economic losses which made people to rethink and study the current seismic design theories and methods. So the theory of performance-based seismic design which was introduced by American scholar becomes an important direction for seismic design. The static pushover analysis method, the main tool for this theory, is widely interested in home and abroad. In the method, the selection of lateral load patterns and the definition of target displacement are all very important, because they have a great effect on the precision of analysis.Some typical static pushover analysis methods were introduced and those merits and drawbacks were given in this paper. Based these, the selection of lateral load patterns was researched soundly. First, a static pushover analysis was made for a 10-stories steel frame under 6 different lateral load patterns, and how the different lateral load patterns affect the story drifts and the distribution of plastic hinges was also studied. Then the seismic performance of this frame was evaluated according to the requirement of the code for seismic design of buildings, and the rational lateral load pattern was gotten for the evaluation of seismic performance of buildings.According to the requirement of site condition and classification of design earthquake in the code for seismic design of buildings (GB50011-2001), the relation of strength reduction factor and displacement ductility factor introduced by Lu Xilin was applied to the static pushover analysis method in this paper. The elastic-plastic response spectrum was built by reducing the elastic response spectrum, so the calculation of target displacement through the equivalent period was improved in this paper. The analysis results showed that this method is simple and practical, and it has a certain reference value for the further improvement and application of the static pushover analysis method.
