The establishment of a landscape database is both an important problem and a key of the practical method of aesthetics design in the tunnel portals. To organize a landscape database that is convenient to use, rich in content and with visual representation, can provides various examples for reference for both layout and research of landscape design of tunnel portals.This thesis is focus on the establishment of a multimedia landscape database of tunnel portals. Firstly, the classification of tunnel gate styles is introduced from the angle of engineering. Then the basic theories of scenic esthetics are used to analyse the scenic factors of the tunnel gate structure. According to these, environment, tunnel gate types, gate styles, slopes, design of the nameplates, material, facing design of the retaining walls or headwalls, design of the space between the holes and the design of lights are determined to be the key scenic factors.Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Visual Basic 6.0 are utilized to establish the database. This database is constituted by the entrances of mountain tunnels, subaqueous and underpass tunnels and underground space in cities. Pictures, videos and animations are used to represent the scenic samples. The main functions of the database include data query, date management and landscape evaluation.In the last part of the thesis, same points about the tunnel gates in scenic design are concluded after analyzing the samples in the database. Up bamboo-truncating tunnel portals are suitable for gentle slope at the tunnel opening. And down bamboo-truncating style is more suitable for steep slopes with bad geological conditions. In the condition that the tunnel is connected with the road cutting, the up-truncating tunnel portal with cambered retaining walls seems to be more simple and decent. In the circumstance with a river, a protruded tunnel portal may get better landscape effect. Bamboo-truncating portal style in beauty spots will undermine the environment to minimum level. While the architectural design of retaining walls can better represents the humanistic characteristic of the beauty spot. And portals of sheltering style can be used in subaqueous tunnels in urban areas. In this way, the portals can better integrate with the environment, and we will get better views in the city.
