With the development of the railway, defect inspection of rails becomes more and more important to ensure the safety. In order to overcome the disadvantages of manual inspections and to adapt the trend of automatic inspections, this paper advances a new inspection method of rail profile defects based upon CCD-Laser system, image processing and GPS. The advantage of it is not only decreasing the effect of environmental factor and economizing on manpower, but also advancing the detection rate of speed and precision.It has high potential applicationsThe paper is composed of two parts: one is design of image processing software; the other is design of software and hardware of GPS system.The first part puts forward the scheme of image processing software based upon the peculiarity of rail profile images which were collected by CCD-Laser system. This paper illuminates the primary technique in process one by one. It mostly include pick-uping rail object curve, aberration emendation, and coordinate transformation. Every arithmetic is compared with each other . And the best image processing arithmetic is choosed to use. In this paper, there have some improve in image segmentation, pick-uping curve, in order to meet system's request.The second part designs the GPS system. This paper designs the hardware which includes interface circuit of GPS, LCD, SRAM, RS-232, keyboard, reset, and the software which includes picking-up GPS data, series communication, display of LCD. When the rail wear exceed the standard, GPS system will note the location. GPS data will display on LCD, and GPS system communicate with PC.
