As the technology of substation automation is developing rapidly, the manufacturers all over the world promote various IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Devices) of the substation automation system subsequently. Due to the network and communication protocol utilized by manufacturers are incompatible to each other, it is necessary to convert the protocols to ensure different manufacturers IEDs being integrated into one substation system. The conversion of the different protocols is troublesome and will increase the cost and reduce the reliability of the system. In order to solve the present problem and adapt to the rapid updating of computer and the communication technologies. The manufacturer and the user earnestly hope concerned authority organizes to draw up a communication standard with the unification and advanced technical system.DEC 61850 substation communication network and system is an international standard about substation automation promulgated officially by IEC TC57 in 2005. Through the object-oriented information modelling ? the application layer of communication mapping on MMS, The standard can qualify interoperability of the IEDs from different vendors and simplify their integration into one system.The article first introduced the production, the development and the present situation of the IEC 61850 standard, have analyzed its formulation mentality, the characteristic and the standard system content. Then, By the substation automation system merchant angle, taked IED products development flow of the IEC 61850 standards as the clue, has carried on the modeling and the disposition to the WDR—881 microcomputers protective equipment, and has analyzed the communication mapping model of each kind of type message. Then, on the base of analyzing the substation communication network data stream, with OPNET simulation software, has carried on the simulation analysis based on the switched ethernet station level network performance, has drawn the simulation conclusion. Finally, proposed Ethernet communication module design project of Tele-Communication Manage Equipment, and the ethernet communication module buffer size is calculated based on queue theory.
