Nowadays, great progress has made in Chinese big cities. However, many unaccommodated phenomenons have emerged during the course of city expansion. Especially, the inconsistent development of urban spatial structure and road traffic confused many metropolis. This paper tries to take the Nanchang city as the example to discuss this problem.There is in existence the objective interactive feedback relationship between urban spatial structure and road traffic. Whether the harmony between urban spatial structure and road traffic is established had usually decided the potential of cities. This paper summarizes theories on mutual relationship between urban spatial structure and road traffic both in China and abroad. The historical evolution process between urban spatial structure and road traffic, relating urban planning theory and urban traffic development strategy are analyzed according to three historical periods which is agricultural, industrial and post-industrial periods. Subsequently, the relationship between urban spatial structure and road traffic in history about Nanchang is discussed. Then the author depicts urban spatial structure and road traffic of today's Nanchang. One-centre urban spatial structure leads to many traffic problems, such as traffic dram, is pointed out. Afterwards, problems between urban spatial structure and road traffic about Nanchang are clarified, including urban function is excessively centralized in the south of Nanchang; road building lags behind urban space development; public traffic lags behind urban spatial expansion; resident traffic mode structure is irrational, traffic time and traffic space is centered in the south of Nanchang.Finally, development trend of urban spatial structure and road traffic in Nanchang is described according to urban master planning of Nanchang. Urban sprawl can't be changed recently. But we should control it in the long time. In order to realize sustainable development of Nanchang, urban spatial structure based on TOD pattern is put forward. Optimize strategies on urban spatial structure are discussed based on traffic development and urban planning. Mixed functional districts should be planned to decrease long-distance traffic. And also implementing BRT system, traffic demanding management, and developing intelligent transportation systems are important measures to realize harmony development between urban spatial development and traffic.
