Analysis On Modern City Square Space Characteristics

With the development of the economy and the acceleration of urbanization process, the pace of life has become more and more fast. People are eager to get in touch with nature. The building of the square not only enrichs the city space, but also provides a pleasant outdoor green space for people. Square is closely related to human activities, so how to design the square space occupies an important place in the square design .The space is not only a direct reflection of the square, but also the combination and change of the spacial elements decide the level of acceptance by the public. So the research is benefit to analysis of the structural changes in the square space.Firstly, just as the interior space, the city square space is compounded with "bottom" ,"border", and "furnitures" .The "bottom" of square is the face of the earth, which often is natural or artificial topography. The"border"means the surrounding buildings of the square. The"furnitures"can be seen as the decorative and functional objects.Secondly, the material and spiritual elements of the square space are the important indicator for measuring the square space. The material elements include scale, form, texture and altitude, etc , the spiritual elements include the use and context. The material elements decide the form,constitution,relief,feature of the square space and relation ship with the city space. The spiritual elements are considered as the hidden elements, but they are very important to square space and not be overlooked. Through the analysis of various elements, we can find their relationship with the square space, and do theoretical basis for Gulou Square.Finally, Gulou Square is in the center of the Nanjing and has strong historical and cultural flavor. After several decades of development, it compands to the eastward Beijige Square, and the region has formed the aerial view from Gulou to Beijige. I investigate the space of Gulou and Beijige square, classific to the collecting first-hand information, and put forward my own views.
